India will build as well as upgrade four national highway projects with a combined investment of over ₹24,000 crore across Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar and Odisha.

Accordingly, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved these four individual projects located in Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar and Odisha.

In all, these four projects put together will cover more than 700 km, and are expected to improve regional connectivity, ease congestion, reduce travel time and strengthen logistics integration under the PM GatiShakti framework.

Madhya Pradesh project

On individual basis, the CCEA approved the upgradation of the Hiwarkhedi-Roshni-Ashapur-Rudhy section of NH-347B to a two-lane paved shoulder standard and the widening of the Deshgaon-Julwaniya section of NH-347B to four lanes in Madhya Pradesh.

The 233.65-km project will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) at a cost of ₹4,415.60 crore.

This corridor passes through Betul, Khandwa, Khargone and Barwani districts and is expected to address geometric deficiencies, sharp curves and congestion across built-up areas.

An additional 16.20-km greenfield bypass around Khargone will also be constructed as part of the project.

The project is expected to improve connectivity to six economic nodes, five social nodes and five logistics nodes, including textile clusters, mega food parks, thermal power plants, airports and railway stations.

Telangana project

The CCEA also approved the widening of the Armoor-Jagtial-Mancherial section of NH-63 and the Jagtial-Karimnagar section of NH-563 in Telangana.

The 190.76-km project will be executed under a combination of Hybrid Annuity Mode and Build-Operate-Transfer (Toll) mode at a total cost of ₹7,597.16 crore.

At present, these highway sections experience significant congestion across major urban centres, including Armoor, Korutla, Jagtial, Dharmapuri, Lakshettipet, Mancherial and Karimnagar.

The project includes bypasses around built-up areas and is designed for speeds of up to 100 km per hour.

Upon completion, travel time between Armoor and Mancherial is expected to reduce by about one hour and 30 minutes, while travel time between Jagtial and Karimnagar is expected to reduce by around 45 minutes.

The corridor will connect five economic nodes, seven social nodes and ten logistics nodes.

Bihar project

Besides, the CCEA approved the upgradation of the Khagaria-Purnea section of NH-31 and NH-231 in Bihar to four-lane standards.

The 143.53-km project will be implemented under BOT (Toll) mode at a cost of ₹3,936.05 crore.

This project passes through Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Katihar and Purnia districts and aims to address congestion, sharp curves and geometric deficiencies along the route.

A 6.73-km greenfield bypass around Purnea city will also be developed.

The project is expected to reduce travel time by around two hours while improving road safety, fuel efficiency and vehicle operating costs.

After completion, the upgraded corridor will connect five economic nodes and eleven logistics nodes, including railway stations, airports and key highway corridors.

Odisha project

Furthermore, the CCEA approved construction of a new coastal highway from Rameshwar to Paradeep in Odisha.

The 160.18-km project will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode at a cost of ₹8,300.79 crore.

The proposed corridor will pass through Khurda, Puri, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur districts and is aimed at improving connectivity along Odisha’s coastal belt.

In addition, the project will comprise a four-lane section between Rameshwar and Konark and a two-lane paved shoulder section from Konark to Paradeep.

As per the CCEA, the project will reduce travel time between Rameshwar and Paradeep by around two hours and 30 minutes.

The highway will connect nine economic nodes and five logistics nodes and is expected to improve freight movement while reducing fuel consumption, carbon emissions and vehicle operating costs.
