India’s aviation safety regulator has initiated an investigation into a taxiway incident involving Air India and IndiGo aircraft at Ahmedabad airport on June 24 after an Air India aircraft inadvertently continued on an incorrect taxi route following landing.
According to Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Air India flight AI2493, operated by an Airbus A320 aircraft (VT-TQV), landed on “Runway 23” at Ahmedabad after operating from Mumbai.
After vacating the runway through taxiway “C”, the regulator said the aircraft was instructed to proceed to the international apron via taxiways “P” and “G”.
However, the aircraft continued on taxiway “P” instead of taking the designated right turn onto taxiway “G” towards the international apron.
The regulator said the Air India crew immediately stopped the aircraft on taxiway “P”.
At approximately the same time, IndiGo flight 6E-5160, operated by an Airbus A320 aircraft (VT-IST), was taxiing on taxiway “P” for departure from Ahmedabad to Mumbai.
As per DGCA, the IndiGo aircraft also stopped on the taxiway and both aircraft maintained sufficient separation between them.
Subsequently, the Air India aircraft was towed to its parking stand.
On Wednesday, IndiGo confirmed that flight 6E-5160 experienced a brief delay while taxiing for departure after an aircraft belonging to another airline inadvertently took an incorrect turn and came in the way of its aircraft.
“Both aircraft came to a halt at a safe distance from each other. The other aircraft was subsequently towed away and our flight departed and landed safely at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai,” an IndiGo spokesperson had said.
The airline added that the relevant authorities were informed in accordance with established procedures.
On its part, Air India acknowledged the incident and said flight AI2493 had inadvertently taken a wrong turn during taxiing after landing at Ahmedabad.
“There was no compromise on the safety of passengers and crew. The aircraft was subsequently towed back to the parking bay. The matter has been reported to the regulatory authorities and an investigation initiated,” an Air India spokesperson had said on Wednesday.
