The Telangana Government is aiming to set up 600 Electric Vehicle (EV) charging and battery swapping stations across the state over the next three years to reach 12,000 by 2035.

To hasten the establishment of EV charging stations, the Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TGREDCO), the designated State nodal agency for EV charging, has developed a single-window clearance mechanism for EV charging stations through which 1,244 approvals have been processed to date, according to Naveen Mittal, Special Chief Secretary, Telangana Energy Department.

The corporation has also invited Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the development of EVCS under the Government of India’s PM E-Drive initiative.

As of now, there are 1,063 operational EV charging stations in the State, including about 600 located in Hyderabad. EV charging consumption has grown nearly 4 times year-on-year, demonstrating a steep increase in utilisation.

The Government has been taking a slew of measures to boost EV adoption and develop the ecosystem. In March, it rolled out the country’s first State-negotiated discount of up to 20 per cent on Electric Vehicles (EVs) for government employees to encourage the adoption of EVs. The state is also offering full exemption from road tax and registration fees for EVs, significantly boosting adoption.

Telangana is witnessing rapid growth in EV adoption. It had so far registered over 2.8 lakh EV vehicles, with 91,572 new registrations in FY26. About 5 per cent of new vehicle registrations are EVs, reflecting growing consumer adoption, and the total EV market value reached ₹6,297 crore in FY 2025–26.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

EVs are increasingly being used in the public transport system in the State. Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) operates 325 E-buses from six city depots and has EV retrofitments for 240 diesel buses.

The Government is also implementing one of India’s largest e-bus programs, targeting 2,800 electric buses by 2027 in Hyderabad. There will be 10 new depots with integrated chargers under construction, and 10 dedicated intermediate charging stations are being commissioned.
