As part of its re-prioritisation efforts, the government on Saturday barred piped natural gas (PNG) consumers from either retaining a domestic LPG connection or getting a refill for a cylinder from PSU oil marketing companies.
Dual PNG-LPG connections now disallowed
“No person having a PNG connection and also having domestic LPG connection shall retain a domestic LPG connection, or take refills of domestic LPG cylinders from any Government oil company, or through their distributors. Such persons will be required to immediately surrender their domestic LPG connection,” a government notification said.
No person having a PNG connection shall obtain a domestic LPG connection or take refills for domestic LPG cylinders from any Government oil company or through its distributors, it added.
PSU oil firms barred from supply
The government has also prohibited PSU OMCs from providing a domestic LPG connection, and/or supplying domestic LPG cylinder refills to a consumer who already owns a PNG connection.
The mover is part of the government’s LPG consumption re-prioritisation efforts to address the fallout from the blocking of the Strait of Hormuz (SoH). India consumed 33 million tonnes (mt) of LPG in FY25, of which around 20.67 mt was imported. Around 90 per cent of the imports came from West Asia, with most of them transiting the 34-km-long world’s most critical energy choke point. The other reprioritising efforts include giving priority to households, hospitals, and educational institutions. Besides, domestic refiners have been directed to increase LPG production and supply finished LPG only to PSU OMCs.
