As India scales its renewable energy capacity to achieve a non-fossil target of 500 Gigawatt(GW) by 2030, rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana are shaping up to be a significant driver of this growth and have doubled in FY26.

In the financial year ending March 2026, a total of about 21.2 lakh households were benefited fromrooftop solar installations under the scheme. This figure is nearly double the roughly 10.8 lakh installations in the preceding fiscal(FY25) and has pushed the overall installation base to over 32 Lakh households.

The scheme was launched in February 2024 with a target of installations in 1 crore households which, if achieved, is estimated to produce renewable electricity of 1 trillion units and a reduction of 720 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. 

Despite the increase in total number of installations, the growth has not been broad based with Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat accounting for 60 per cent of households that saw installations in 2026. 

Maharashtra saw the most installations in 5,15,009 households, up 2x from FY25. Uttar Pradesh with 4,34,082 saw an even higher 4x jump while Gujarat saw installations in 3,19,391 households. 

On the other hand, Punjab, with installations in 6,460  households, recorded a 16 per cent increase- the lowest growth rate among major states. 

Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, despite their size and power demand, saw relatively lower additions. Karnataka saw installations in 15,691 households up 34 per cent year-on year while Tamil Nadu saw an increase of 48 per cent with 40,197 household installations. 

In the south, the adoption was led by Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, which saw additions in 1,29,541 and 97,347 households respectively. 

Meanwhile, states like Assam, Chhattisgarh, Tripura, and Nagaland saw an exponential increase in additions, but this came off small FY25 bases.
