In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel conservation, the Delhi state government has announced a set of measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption.

On Thursday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government has introduced a structured plan to promote fuel efficiency as well as responsible resource use across departments.

As part of this policy, all Delhi government employees will work from home for two days every week.

Besides, 50 per cent of official meetings will now be conducted online to reduce travel-related fuel consumption.

The Delhi government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will revise office timings to help decongest peak-hour traffic and improve fuel efficiency across the capital.

Furthermore, the state government plans to reduce petrol allocations for officers by 20 per cent, bringing the monthly cap down from 200 litres.

Official vehicles restricted

Meanwhile, the use of official vehicles will be restricted as part of broader expenditure rationalisation measures.

Additionally, the State government has decided not to procure any new official vehicles for the next six months.

On the mobility front, the government will introduce a designated “Metro Day”, on which ministers and senior officials will use Metro services for official commuting.

Apart from this, Delhi citizens will be encouraged to observe a weekly “No Car Day” to further reduce fuel usage and road congestion.

To support employee commuting requirements, 58 special buses will be operated across 29 government residential colonies for staff transportation.

According to the state government, the measures were finalised after a review meeting chaired by the Chief Minister with Cabinet ministers and senior officials, focused on identifying avenues for reducing fuel consumption and improving administrative efficiency.

In addition, the initiative follows the Prime Minister’s appeal for reduced fuel use and prudent public expenditure.
