Indira Gandhi International Airport has become the first infrastructure facility in the country to install an integrated aviation weather intelligence system called ‘Skycast’.

Accordingly, the system was launched by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology on Friday.

It is aimed at strengthening aviation safety and improving real-time weather monitoring for airport and flight operations.

According to DIAL, the system integrates multiple atmospheric monitoring and remote sensing technologies, including Radar Wind Profiler (RWP), Microwave Profiling Radiometer (MPR), SODAR (Sonic Detection and Ranging) and Automated Weather Stations (AWS).

The platform enables continuous monitoring of weather parameters such as temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, cloud liquid water content and atmospheric stability.

Officials said ‘Skycast’ can assess atmospheric conditions from the surface up to nearly 10 km altitude and generate aviation meteorological parameters including wind shear, turbulence, fog formation indicators and icing potential.

A key feature of the system is its automated nowcasting and hazard alerting capability, which provides real-time alerts for aviation hazards including wind shear, fog, low-level jets and turbulence. 

The system also supports short-term operational nowcasts updated every five minutes.

Notably, the  deployment of ‘Skycast’ is expected to improve aviation safety, reduce weather-related delays and diversions and strengthen operational preparedness during severe weather conditions.
