V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority in Thoothukudi is accelerating its green transition initiatives with new partnerships in green fuels, sustainability and renewable energy infrastructure.
An MoU was signed with AM Green Ammonia (India) Pvt Ltd for setting up a 1 Million Tonnes Per Annum green ammonia plant at Thoothukudi. The project will include ammonia handling, storage and bunkering infrastructure, pilot bunkering operations, safety systems and training programmes.
The port also exchanged an MoU with Bureau Veritas (India) Pvt Ltd for collaboration on Green Port certification, emissions accounting, ESG reporting, safety validation, green bunkering practices and the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for green fuels and sustainability.
The MoUs were signed during a visit to the port on May 28 by Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). He also reviewed the port’s renewable energy and sustainability projects, including its pilot green hydrogen plant, EV charging station and ongoing 9 MW wind power project.
A port release said the initiative is expected to help develop green fuel corridors linking VOC Port with major ports in Europe and Asia, strengthening India’s role in the global green fuels value chain.
The Secretary also inspected the upcoming 750 cubic metre green methanol bunkering and refuelling facility and visited the port’s Digital Twin facility, where officials demonstrated real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance capabilities.
VOC Port Auhtority’s chairperson Susanta Kumar Purohit said the port aims to become a sustainable maritime hub and achieve net zero status by 2026.
