ensex Today, Nifty 50 | Stock Market Updates - Find here all the live updates related to Sensex, Nifty, BSE, NSE, share prices and Indian stock markets for 4th May 2026.
Benchmark indices traded modestly higher in afternoon deals, gaining a little over 0.40%, after opening with gains of more than 1%. At 1:02 p.m., the Sensex was up 325 points (0.42%) at 77,239, while the Nifty 50 rose 100 points (0.42%) to 24,098.
However, analysts expect a volatile, news-driven week, with investors closely tracking state election outcomes, crude oil prices, and developments in the West Asia conflict. Elevated Brent crude levels amid tensions around the Strait of Hormuz continue to remain a key macro concern, posing risks to inflation, the rupee, and corporate margins.
Stock-specific moves are expected to be driven by key Q4 earnings from companies such as Ambuja Cements, BHEL, and major auto makers.
Macroeconomic data, including PMI readings and foreign exchange reserves, along with FII flows and currency movements, will also influence market direction. Overall sentiment is likely to hinge on geopolitical stability and crude oil price trends.

Key indicators for today’s trade
Bank Nifty technicals:
* Bullish structure with breakout bias: Nifty Bank has sustained a gap-up and is holding above the key psychological level of 55,000, indicating continuation strength. The index maintaining above 55,300 support keeps the near-term trend positive with scope for a move towards 56,250–56,700 resistance zone.
* Outperformance and sector breadth support: PSU Banks are outperforming Private Banks, with broad-based gains across constituents (only one stock in red). This positive market breadth strengthens the uptrend quality and reduces the risk of a narrow, fragile rally.
Nifty technical:
* Strong bullish structure above key support zone: Nifty 50 sustaining above 24,100 keeps the short-term trend positive, with immediate support placed in the 24,100–24,050 range. As long as this zone holds, the index retains upside bias toward 24,350, indicating continuation of momentum despite intraday profit booking from highs.
* Breakout and resistance setup intact: On the upside, resistance is placed near 24,400, and a decisive breakout above it could extend the rally toward 24,600. However, a fall below 24,140–24,050 would weaken momentum and open the risk of a deeper correction toward 23,900 levels.

Bitcoin nears $80,000, led by ETF inflows; investors urged to tread carefully amid macro risks and key resistance zone
Vikram Subburaj, CEO, Giottus.com
May 04, 2026
Bitcoin moved back towards the $80,000 mark on May 4, 2026, with desks showing BTC near $80,099. This is up 2.51% in 24 hours with a market capitalisation of about $1.60 trillion. The move is important because BTC has crossed the $78,100 True Market Mean. This level had acted as the main near-term ceiling in mid-April.
The immediate trading band is now clearer. The first support sits around $78,000-$78,100, followed by the broader $74,000-$76,000 zone. Resistance is clustered around $80,100-$81,000. A clean hold above $78,100 would suggest that the market has absorbed part of the overhead supply from short-term holders.
On-chain data show that this is not yet a euphoric phase. An April 15 reading placed short-term-holder supply in profit at 43.2%, while the 30-day EMA of the realised profit/loss ratio stood at 1.16. That combination points to improving sentiment, but also shows that investors are selling into strength.
ETF flows supported the recovery. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs took in $663.9 million on April 17, $238.4 million on April 20, $335.8 million on April 22, and $629.8 million on May 1. The weak patch came between April 27 and April 29. This is when ETFs saw outflows of $263.2 million, $89.7 million, and $137.6 million.
The April-end macro backdrop remained complicated. The U.S. Federal Reserve kept rates at 3.50%-3.75% on April 29. However, the decision saw four dissents and it was the most divided vote since 1992, as per reports. Iran-war inflation risk and oil above $100 a barrel kept rate-cut expectations under pressure.
Altcoins were positive, but not broadly strong. ETH was around $2,363, up 2.76% in 24 hours; XRP was near $1.41, up 1.70%; BNB was near $625.80, up 1.70%; SOL was around $84.60 in a market-cap table; and TRX was near $0.33. The market, therefore, remains BTC-led rather than altcoin-led.
Our advice: Investors should treat the $78,000-$80,000 Bitcoin zone as a decision band rather than a breakout confirmation. ETF inflows above $600 million on strong days indicate institutional demand remains strong, but macro risks remain elevated ahead of the May 12 U.S. CPI print. Investors may prefer staggered entries instead of chasing short-term rallies near resistance. Portfolio allocation should remain selective, with attention on liquidity, macro data, and position sizing rather than momentum alone.

Crypto markets see volatility as ‘Project Freedom’ adds macro trigger; Bitcoin steady, altcoins rally; investors urged to take measured approach
The announcement of “Project Freedom” around the Strait of Hormuz has added a fresh macro trigger to crypto markets, with Bitcoin holding steady in the $78K–$80K range even as assets like Ethereum and Dogecoin see sharper upward moves. This divergence highlights a shift in market structure where Bitcoin is acting as a stability anchor, while liquidity is rotating into higher beta plays. The recent price action also reinforces how closely crypto is now tied to global developments, with geopolitical signals driving short term sentiment, quick reversals, and bursts of volatility across the board.
From an investor perspective, this environment calls for a measured and disciplined approach. Instead of chasing sharp rallies in select tokens, investors should focus on staggered accumulation, prioritising fundamentally strong assets and maintaining a balanced allocation. It is equally important to avoid reacting impulsively to headline driven moves and instead track key price levels and liquidity flows. Phases where Bitcoin consolidates while altcoins outperform can often indicate early signs of a broader upcycle, but navigating this phase effectively will depend on patience, consistency, and a long term.

Markets set for firm start near 24,270, but sustainability hinges on earnings and volatility
Hariprasad K, SEBI-registered Research Analyst and Founder, Livelong Wealth.
Indian markets are poised to begin the week on a firm footing, with Gift Nifty signalling a gap-up opening near the 24,270 mark, well above the previous close of 23,997. The positive carryover reflects improving global sentiment, with Asian markets also trading in the green, setting the stage for a supportive start to domestic equities.
However, while the opening bias is clearly optimistic, the key question remains one of sustainability. Markets continue to operate in an environment where momentum is largely event-driven, rather than supported by broad-based conviction.
Earnings-driven action will be a critical factor to watch in today’s session. Heavyweights such as Ambuja Cements, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, and Tata Technologies are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping sectoral sentiment. Strong performance from Ambuja could reinforce confidence in the cement and infrastructure theme, particularly around execution and synergy benefits. BHEL’s numbers will be closely tracked as a proxy for capital goods and PSU momentum, where expectations remain elevated. Tata Technologies, meanwhile, will be key for sentiment in the ER&D and IT space, especially following recent underperformance.
In addition, stocks such as Godrej Properties and Aditya Birla Capital are likely to influence sentiment in the real estate and NBFC segments respectively, with management commentary expected to carry as much weight as the headline numbers in guiding near-term direction.
From a volatility perspective, India VIX remains elevated at around 18.4. While not at extreme levels, it continues to signal underlying caution. A sustained upside move could help compress volatility, easing option premiums and supporting a more stable trading environment. Conversely, any failure to build on the positive opening may keep volatility elevated, limiting aggressive positioning.

State elections outcome, oil prices, earnings major drivers for stock markets this week: Analysts
Stock markets are likely to be guided this week by the outcome of state elections and high crude oil prices amid the West Asia conflict, say analysts.
The developments related to the West Asia conflict and the Strait of Hormuz will also be tracked by investors, they said.
Counting of votes for the five assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry will begin on Monday, May 4.
“The most immediate catalyst will be the outcome of key state elections, with investors closely watching whether the ruling party at the Centre can wrest West Bengal from Trinamool Congress and make meaningful inroads into opposition-ruled Kerala and Tamil Nadu, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) currently has a limited presence,” Hariprasad K, Research Analyst and Founder, Livelong Wealth, said.
