Suzlon Energy on Monday launched India’s tallest wind turbine, the 5 MW S175, aimed at unlocking higher energy generation in low to medium wind potential regions across India.

The turbine was successfully commissioned at Vijayanagar in Karnataka, the company said in an official release. Positioned as India’s first FDRE-ready turbine (Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy), the S175 is designed to enable wind energy to play a larger role in grid-stable renewable energy systems, including hybrid, round-the-clock (RTC) and firm power solutions. The new turbine has been developed based on more than 30 years of operational experience from Suzlon’s existing 15.5 GW installed fleet, the company added.

The S175 features a 175-metre rotor, a 160-metre hybrid lattice tower and a blade tip height of 247.5 metres, allowing it to access stronger and more consistent wind regimes at higher altitudes. Suzlon said the design enables higher energy generation and improved project economics, particularly in low to medium wind potential regions across India.

The technology of the 5 MW WTG is the same as the one showcased by the company in Spain earlier this year. However, it has been adapted for Indian conditions, the company said. The turbine incorporates advanced aerodynamics, carbon girder blade technology and intelligent control systems aimed at improving efficiency and performance. According to the company, these design upgrades also allow previously unviable wind sites to become commercially viable, expanding the addressable wind energy market in the country.

Suzlon Executive Vice-Chairman, Girish Tanti, said the S175 has been designed specifically for Indian wind conditions, grid requirements and operating environments, reflecting the company’s focus on locally optimised technology development. He added that the key breakthrough lies not only in higher energy output, but also in expanding viable wind sites, thereby widening the market potential for wind power deployment in India.
