As the Skywheel soars the skies of Chennai, the moment marks the completion of a ten year journey that has been the construction and opening of Wonderla Chennai.

The fully air conditioned ride, standing at 80 metres, will also include Sky View Diner, an air-conditioned elevated dining space located within the structure. The ride has been built with an investment of ₹37 crore.

Wonderla Holidays had signed an MoU in 2015 with Guidance Tamil Nadu, the State’s investment promotion agency, to set up the park. Built with an investment of₹611 crore, the park was opened in December of last year and can entertain up to 6,500 visitors everyday.

The company’s first facility in Tamil Nadu, had recorded revenues of ₹12 crore in its first month of operations and saw over 75,000 visitors in December alone.

Speaking to businessline, Arun K Chittilappilly, Executive Chairman and Managing Director, Wonderla Holidays said that the company is expecting a strong footfall from the Chennai park in FY27 and that it should soon compete with the company’s establishments in other cities.

“We have seen strong footfalls in our Chennai park even though it has been only 3-4 months. Now that it is fully complete, the footfall should grow at a steady state and we expect that it will soon compete with our Bangalore, Cochin and Hyderabad parks,” he said.

He added that the company is also looking at Chennai as one of the locations for its next resort offering. It had recently announced the launch of Terrea by Wonderla, an earth-inspired urban resort adjacent to its Bengaluru park, which was revamped over eight months with an investment of around ₹18 crore.

As for the company’s future plans, Chittilappilly said that it is now in discussions to open its next park with Mumbai, Indore, Ahmedabad and Goa being evaluated as prospective cities.

Chittilappilly added that the Wonderla is also looking at adjacent businesses such as virtual indoor entertainment and content creation but said that these plans are at early phases.
