Tesla has cut the entry price of its India portfolio by nearly ₹9 lakh with the launch of the new Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive Premium at ₹50.89 lakh (ex-showroom). This makes it the cheapest Tesla currently on sale in the country and signals a broader push to widen demand beyond early adopters.
The new variant, with deliveries slated to begin from July 2026, comes less than a year after Tesla’s India debut in July 2025, when the company launched the Model Y at ₹59.89 lakh amid high import duties and years of tariff negotiations between India and the US.
Unlike a stripped-down entry variant, the newly launched Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive sits significantly below the original launch price while adding features such as an all-black interior, larger 16-inch front touchscreen and a new Zen Grey cabin theme — effectively giving buyers more features at a lower price point.
More importantly, the new pricing pulls Tesla closer to the heart of India’s premium EV market. At ₹50.89 lakh, the Model Y Premium now sits in direct conversation with the BMW iX1 LWB (₹51.40 lakh) and BYD Sealion 7 (₹49.40 lakh), and within striking distance of the Volvo EC40. The Kia EV6, at ₹65.97 lakh, remains in a different bracket altogether — though dealers are reportedly offering discounts that could narrow the gap. It is the first time Tesla has been genuinely price-competitive in this segment rather than floating above it.
The nearly ₹9 lakh price correction comes amid a relatively muted response to Tesla’s India entry. Industry estimates suggest Tesla sold around 350 Model Y units since its July 2025 launch, with total bookings reportedly crossing just over 600 units in the months that followed — modest volumes for a company that had spent years lobbying to enter one of the world’s largest automotive markets.
The revised pricing suggests Tesla is now attempting to widen its addressable market without completely stepping away from its premium positioning.
Tesla’s India strategy has also evolved rapidly within months. In April 2026, the company introduced the six-seat long-wheelbase Model Y L at ₹61.99 lakh, targeting buyers seeking additional cabin space and luxury positioning.
With the launch of the ₹50.89 lakh Premium variant, Tesla’s India portfolio now spans an ₹11 lakh range across three Model Y configurations, giving the company a broader pricing ladder for the first time in the country.
The launch comes at a time when the proposed India-US trade framework is expected to reduce tariffs on high-end American automobiles from nearly 110 per cent to around 30 per cent.
While implementation details are still evolving, the new pricing indicates Tesla may already be beginning to factor future tariff rationalisation into its India strategy. The Model Y Premium is expected to be among the first Tesla vehicles delivered in India under the evolving trade framework.
