The deal also signals rising global traction for Indian space start-ups, as they move beyond domestic deployments to secure high-value international contracts.

Bengaluru-based space tech start-up Pixxel has secured a contract from the US National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) to provide advanced hyperspectral remote sensing capabilities, in a significant boost to its global ambitions in the defence and intelligence segment.

The award, granted under the NRO’s Commercial Systems Program, will focus on evaluating and integrating commercial hyperspectral data into the agency’s remote sensing architecture. Pixxel will leverage its on-orbit Firefly satellite constellation to demonstrate how hyperspectral imagery can provide deeper insights into materials, environmental conditions and activities that are not detectable through traditional imaging systems.

“Pixxel is excited for the opportunity to work with the NRO to advance the adoption of space-based hyperspectral data and demonstrate the unique value this phenomenology brings to the intelligence community,” said Allyson Jenkins, vice president, public sector at Pixxel.

Broader push

The contract will be executed by Pixxel’s US federal team and is part of a broader push by the NRO to incorporate commercial data providers into its intelligence framework. The move reflects a growing reliance on private space companies to enhance government capabilities with faster, scalable and cost-effective satellite data solutions.

Pixxel, which has launched six satellites as part of its Firefly constellation in 2025, is positioning itself as a key player in hyperspectral imaging—a technology increasingly seen as critical for defence, environmental monitoring, energy and agriculture applications.

The deal also signals rising global traction for Indian space start-ups, as they move beyond domestic deployments to secure high-value international contracts. With hyperspectral data offering a new layer of intelligence, Pixxel’s latest win highlights the expanding role of commercial satellite firms in shaping next-generation earth observation infrastructure.
