TEXMiN, Russia’s GIREDMET partner for R&D in rare-earth p...

TEXMiN Foundation (Technology Translation Research Park) has partnered with Russia’s State Research and Design Institute of Rare Metal Industry (GIREDMET JSC) to focus on joint R&D initiatives to develop NdFeB rare-earth permanent magnet technologies.

Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) rare earth permanent magnets are key intermediate components of permanent magnet synchronous (direct drive) generators in wind turbines (especially for offshore turbines) and electric synchronous traction motors for propulsion systems in battery and hybrid electric vehicles (EVs).

TEXMiN and GIREDMET have signed a Statement of Intent (SoI) to strengthen bilateral cooperation in rare earth permanent magnet technologies, critical minerals, and advanced metallurgical research during the International Congress on Rare Metals, Materials and Related Technologies (RAREMET-2026) being held in Moscow, Russia.

Dheeraj Kumar, Project Director at TEXMiN and Deputy Director of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, said “We view cooperation with GIREDMET as a strategically important step in developing Indian expertise in rare earth magnets and critical minerals. The combination of TEXMiN’s scientific potential and Giredmet’s technological expertise will create the foundation for scaling up NdFeB technologies and establishing a full production cycle in India.”

As per the SoI, TEXMiN and GIREDMET will collaborate on joint research, development, pilot validation, and technology translation related to NdFeB rare-earth permanent magnet technologies.

The proposed collaboration includes joint R&D on NdFeB alloy preparation, sintering, and high-coercivity magnet processing covering the full rare-earth metallurgy cycle, alongside pilot-scale validation of GIREDMET technologies at TEXMiN’s Technology Translation Research Park (TTRP) at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.

The collaboration will also focus on recovery and extraction of rare earth elements from tailings dams, legacy waste heaps, and spent magnets to support circular and sustainable critical mineral value chains. In addition, both organisations have agreed to undertake joint scientific research, academic and expert exchanges, materials characterisation, doctoral and applied research collaboration, and advisory support for Indian and Russian programmes related to rare earths and critical minerals.

Sukumar Mishra, Director of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and Chairman of Hub Governing Board at TEXMiN Foundation, said, “Global transition towards clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and strategic technologies has significantly increased the importance of critical minerals and rare earth materials. This collaboration between TEXMiN and GIREDMET reflects the growing importance of international scientific partnerships in strengthening technology capabilities, innovation ecosystems, and resilient supply chains.”

The SoI also marks the next strategic milestone following the MoU between TEXMiN and GIREDMET on February 6, 2026. It reflects growing India–Russia partnership in critical mineral technologies, rare earth value chains, and advanced materials research aligned with long-term industrial and strategic priorities.

RAREMET-2026, organised by GIREDMET under ROSATOM, is regarded as one of the largest international forums in Russia dedicated to rare metals, rare earth materials, advanced technologies, and sustainable industrial development.

The SoI also outlines the intent of both organisations to jointly develop a concrete project proposal with defined technical objectives, implementation milestones, and future funding pathways through designated technical teams and collaborative research engagements.

TEXMiN is a section-8 company created under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) programme by the Department of Science and Technology at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. GIREDMET is an entity of the Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation of Russia, which is a nuclear energy solutions behemoth.
