The technology is designed to cut emissions, lower fuel consumption and increase the use of renewable electricity in cement manufacturing, with the potential to reduce coal consumption to zero, while enabling the flexible use of alternative fuels

Updated - June 22, 2026 at 02:11 PM.

Ambuja Cements, the cement and building materials company of the Adani Group, has partnered with UK-headquartered clean technology firm Leilac Ltd to develop one of the world’s largest commercial-scale pathways for low-carbon cement production at its Sanghipuram plant in Gujarat’s Kutch district, the company said on Monday.

The companies will evaluate Leilac’s carbon capture and hybrid electrification technology through a commercial demonstration project at Ambuja’s 6.6 MTPA Sanghi plant. The technology is designed to reduce emissions, lower fuel consumption and increase the use of renewable electricity in cement manufacturing, with the potential to reduce coal consumption to zero, while enabling the flexible use of alternative fuels. However, Adani Group sources told businessline that no cost commitments have been made for the demonstration project at this stage. The company was also silent regarding timelines for this project.

Under the first phase of the agreement, both companies have agreed to collaborate on developing the technical and commercial feasibility of designing, developing and implementing the technology before any investment decisions are taken, sources said. The partnership forms part of Ambuja Cements’ broader decarbonisation strategy and supports its Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated net-zero target for 2050. As the company advances the electrification of cement manufacturing, supported by nearly 1 GW of captive green power capacity, it is laying the groundwork for scaling carbon capture technologies.

Subject to a successful demonstration, the project could be scaled up by seven to eight times, enabling the capture of more than one million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. The companies said the initiative could help establish a scalable pathway for low-carbon cement production in India and beyond. “The cement industry’s transition to a lower-carbon future will require bold thinking, technological innovation and collaboration across the value chain,” stated Karan Adani, Director, Ambuja Cements, in an official release. “Our partnership with Leilac reflects our commitment to evaluating next-generation technologies that can reduce process emissions, while improving energy efficiency and supporting long-term sustainable growth,” he added.
