Elektor is hosting Elektor Engineering Insights #59 on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, with a session titled The Elektor Formant — Hardcore DIY synths, Then and Now. The online show will feature Girts Ozolins and Jacq Noise from Erica Synths, and will look at the Elektor Formant, DIY synth design, and how hands-on instrument building still connects directly to real electronics practice.
It’s a €25 show, brought to you free by us at eeNews Europe!

The original 1977 Elektor Formant synthesizer, showing the modular system, keyboard and period reference material
The Elektor Formant, first introduced in Elektor magazine in the late 1970s, remains one of the best-known DIY modular analog synthesizer projects and still has a loyal following among builders who like doing things the hard way. The show will look at the revival of this Elektor classic, why its gritty old-school design still teaches real electronics, and how the current kit version puts it in front of a new generation of synth builders.
Jacq Noise brings the perspective of a synthesizer builder, educator, and workshop host working at the intersection of electronic music and hands-on learning, while Girts Ozolins has been closely involved in the Formant’s redevelopment at Erica Synths. We’ll also look at what a modern rebuild can change without losing the character of the original, and viewers will have a chance to win one of two Elektor Audio DSP FX Processor boards.
