As city infrastructure and civic amenities emerge as key issues for the urban voters, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Sunday unveiled ‘Chennai Super 6’ manifesto, promising improved civic amenities, transport upgrades and major infrastructure development. 

Among the various promises for Chennai are RO purified drinking water for areas without Metro Water connections. “For residential areas with existing Metro Water access, a regular and periodic water supply will be ensured,” the details released said. 

High-intensity streetlights, and 1,000 new mini-buses to strengthen Chennai’s connectivity, linking residential areas with transport hubs are among other promises DMK makes for Chennai’s voters. 

A new unique indoor cultural center for art, music and literary events will also be set up, it adds. 

 Political observers view this separate manifesto for the city as an attempt by the ruling DMK to address rising demands by the urban voter from the incumbent government. 

Chennai Peripheral Ring Road (from Ennore to Poonjeri), will be completed by 2027.; Metro rail expansion works will be completed by 2028, and construction of stormwater drains will be finished by 2028, the DMK notes in its city manifesto, addressing some of the most commons grievances of the city voter. 

In the industrial front, the DMK promises to make Chennai a tech hub by setting up a specialised centre for AI, Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Immersive Technologies

Interestingly, it also highlights a solution for the stray dog menace noting that under the Animal Birth Control (ABC) program, the number of veterinarians and dog catchers will be tripled.
