Rising crude oil prices and concerns over prolonged higher interest rates in the US weighed on risk assets, pushing both frontline and broader market indices into the red.
Market concerns intensified after the US military conducted self-defence strikes against multiple Iranian targets, prompting Iran to officially close the Strait of Hormuz. While the US military stated that commercial vessels continued to move through the strategic waterway, the development heightened fears of potential supply disruptions.
Sectoral performance remained largely negative, with Nifty IT falling more than 2 per cent and emerging as the biggest laggard. Major technology stocks including HCL Technologies, Infosys and Tech Mahindra were among the top drags on the Nifty 50.
On the other hand, media, pharmaceutical and healthcare stocks displayed relative resilience despite the broader market weakness.
Among Nifty 50 constituents, ONGC, ICICI Bank, Power Grid Corporation and Bharti Airtel were the leading gainers in early trade.
Within the midcap space, MCX, Vodafone Idea, Laurus Labs, Aurobindo Pharma and IRCTC posted modest gains. However, Oracle Financial Services Software, Persistent Systems, Coforge and Tata Elxsi declined between 2 per cent and 4 per cent.
In the smallcap segment, Aegis Logistics, GE Shipping, Dr Lal PathLabs and Welspun Corp gained 1-3 per cent, while Afcons Infrastructure, Zensar Technologies, HBL Engineering and Aditya Birla Real Estate fell 2-3 per cent.
Market breadth remained firmly negative. Of the 2,703 stocks traded on the National Stock Exchange at the time of writing, 882 advanced, 1,726 declined and 95 remained unchanged.
A total of 19 stocks touched their 52-week highs, while 38 stocks hit fresh 52-week lows. Additionally, 34 stocks were locked in their upper circuits, whereas 40 stocks hit their lower circuit limits.

Quote: Pre market analysis by Gaurav Udani
“Nifty is expected to open lower around 23,050, down nearly 150 points, indicating a cautious start amid mixed global cues.
The index is now trading near a crucial support zone, making today’s session important from a technical standpoint. 23,000–23,100 remains a key support range, and a sustained break below this zone could trigger further selling pressure and weaken the short-term structure.
On the upside, 23,400–23,500 continues to act as the immediate resistance zone. Any recovery towards these levels may face selling pressure unless backed by strong buying interest.
The market remains largely driven by global developments and news flow, which could keep volatility elevated throughout the session.
Traders should remain cautious and avoid aggressive positions at the open. A level-based approach remains advisable, with close attention on how the index behaves around the crucial 23,000 support zone.”

Stock Market Live: Updates from Kotak Securities Research
IT Services sector faces heightened AI disruption risks
IT Services (Sector View: Neutral) - Claude Fable 5 increases AI disruption risks for IT services. Anthropic has released the Claude Fable 5 model, a better version of the Mythos Preview model announced in April, but with new safeguards to prevent misuse. The new model shows a significant step up in software engineering tasks, which is not a surprise. It does not seem to exhibit a similar capability improvement in other domains. The stronger improvement in software tasks and in agentic software development capability increases revenue deflation risks for IT services firms in the near to medium term, particularly for firms with large exposure to application services. Still, a few factors can constrain widespread enterprise adoption of Claude Fable 5. How enterprises utilise frontier models, given the higher focus on controlling token costs, will be key to watch.
Government reverses royalty rate benefit on oil blocks
Oil, Gas & Consumable Fuels (Sector View: Neutral) - Royalty benefits partly reversed. In a surprise move, the government has reversed the royalty rate benefit given on oil production from nominated and pre-NELP on-land blocks. The effective rate is back at 16.67 per cent (versus 12.5 per cent announced in May), retroactively from May 11, 2026. However, the benefit of standardised ad valorem deductions of 20 per cent/15 per cent for nominated/other blocks for crude/gas remains in place. The royalty reversal will lead to incremental revenue of ₹23-25 billion to the government. We estimate a negative impact of 1.0-1.5 per cent for ONGC, and a higher 5-6 per cent on OINL. While such policy flip-flops are disappointing, we remain confident that fiscal stability and economic equilibrium provided in the amended ORDA Act and PNG rules are here to stay. ONGC remains our preferred pick.

India and China together account for nearly 40% of Global Construction Growth, Foundamental Report Finds
India and China together account for nearly 40% of global construction growth between 2020 and 2030 according to the latest State of the Project Economy 2026 report from Foundamental, a Berlin-based venture capital firm specialising in architecture, engineering and construction technology that invests worldwide. According to the report, global capital expenditure is becoming increasingly concentrated in five countries: India, China, the United States, Germany and France.
. “India accounts for the second-largest share of global construction growth by volume between 2020 and 2030, at 14.1%, behind only China at 26.1% and ahead of the United States at 11.1%,” said Shubhankar Bhattacharya, Co-Founder & General Partner at Foundamental.
Construction spending hits US$15.97 trillion
Global construction spending reached US$15.97 trillion in 2024 and is projected to grow to US$19.86 trillion by 2028, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.6%. This makes construction one of the largest sectors of the global economy.
Within that total, infrastructure is the fastest-growing major construction segment globally, expanding at a CAGR of 5.1% between 2020 and 2025. In India the pace is markedly higher: the country’s infrastructure market is forecast to grow at around 8% annually through the end of the decade, well above the global rate (source: Mordor Intelligence). The report also notes that global gross fixed capital formation has grown roughly 30-fold since 1960, with that investment becoming increasingly concentrated among a handful of major economies.
“Global construction spending has already surpassed previous forecasts and is creating new opportunities across infrastructure, industrial facilities, energy systems, transportation networks and digital infrastructure,” said Bhattacharya.
