US Ambassador Sergio Gor met Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Wednesday to discuss on expanding access to American energy and ensuring energy security.
“Great meeting with Minister @HardeepSPuri to advance the US-India energy partnership. We discussed strengthening energy security and unlocking new opportunities for accelerating growth. Expanding access to reliable American energy will further deepen our economic ties and support long-term energy security and diversity for both nations,” Gor said on X.
India has been upping its energy purchases from the US since President Donald Trump assumed office last year.
Rising US share carries both strategic value and diversification strategies. Higher energy imports from Washington will help narrow India’s trade deficit with the latter and fit into New Delhi’s broader strategy of diversifying energy supply chains. The increase in crude trade also reinforces energy cooperation between New Delhi and Washington.
Analysts said that India’s higher energy purchases is largely driven by strategic trade considerations and geopolitical dynamics.
Puri in a tweet on X said, “Happy to receive @USAmbIndia H.E. Amb Sergio Gor in my office today. We held productive discussions on the bilateral energy cooperation between our countries and discussed ways to further strengthen our comprehensive energy relationship.”
Since the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, India has been upping its LPG and LNG imports from the US.
