The Chennai Division of Southern Railway (SR) has achieved significant progress in infrastructure strengthening and track improvement works in 2025–26, enabling the relaxation of several Permanent Speed Restrictions (PSRs) across major railway corridors.
The relaxation of speed restrictions has been made possible through systematic engineering interventions including track renewal, strengthening of formation, curve improvements, transition corrections, and continuous monitoring of track geometry and riding quality standards, said a release from SR.
As part of these improvements, the permissible speed in the Chennai Central–Arakkonam section of the Chennai Central–Jolarpettai route has been enhanced in certain locations where speed restrictions were previously imposed, following improvement works carried out on reverse curves.
In the Chennai Central–Gudur section, multiple speed restrictions in the Nayudupeta–Doravari Chatram and Sullurupeta–Polireddipalem stretches have been relaxed following the completion of engineering strengthening works at sharp curve locations and weak formation areas.
Consequently, the permissible speed in those locations has been enhanced from 110 kmph to 125 kmph. Similarly, in the Chennai Egmore – Villupuram section, speed restrictions between Chengalpattu and Villupuram have been eased following curve transition improvements undertaken by the Engineering Department, the release said
In the Chennai Beach – Chennai Egmore section, speed restrictions on the main line have also been relaxed after carrying out corrective measures on reverse curve geometry, facilitating smoother suburban train operations in this highly congested corridor, the release said.
