Karnataka is set for its next political battle. With DK Shivakumar scheduled to take oath as Chief Minister on June 3, attention has shifted to the composition of the new government, particularly whether the Congress will appoint multiple Deputy Chief Ministers to accommodate competing factions, caste groups and regional interests.

On the decision regarding DCMs and ministers, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said: “We have to wait and see; no proposal has come yet. After the proposal comes, how many ministers should be made, how many DCMs should be made, or whether important chairmanships should be given along with this — all these discussions have taken place. That will be known after June 3.”

Kharge also said the search for a new KPCC president is underway. “Since we have only 24 months now, we have to look for a leader who works very fast, stays collective and takes everyone along. There must also be people who cooperate with them,” he said.

The new cabinet will have to balance regional and caste representation. As Chief Minister-designate DK Shivakumar hails from South Karnataka, there is growing clamour for a Deputy Chief Minister from North Karnataka. The post of KPCC president is also expected to be keenly contested.
