JCD Prabhakar, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhaga (TVK) MLA from Thousand Lights constituency, was elected unopposed as speaker of the 17th Tamil Nadu assembly. Prabhakar was the only MLA to file the nomination, to assembly secretary K Srinivasan on Monday.

Prabhakaran had won twice from Villivakkam constituency as a member of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. He left the party just before the elections to join the TVK.
M Ravishankar, MLA from Thuraiyur (SC) (Tiruchirapalli) constituency, was elected unopposed as the Deputy Speaker.
