1. India’s foodgrain reserves in the Central Pool surged to a record high of 122 million tonne (mt) as of June 1. Equal to the country’s entire annual rice consumption, this massive stockpile gives the government a critical buffer just as El Nino risks disrupting the 2026 kharif crop.
2. The monsoon is expected to regain momentum next week, reviving along the west coast while simultaneously gathering strength over the Bay of Bengal, where a key circulation or low-pressure area is likely to take shape. However, uncertainty remains over whether Indian Ocean Dipole will be strong enough to exert a meaningful influence on India’s rainfall.
3. Pakistan plans to extend the duty drawback benefit to its Basmati exporters beyond June, as it has helped improve shipments of the aromatic rice. The benefit was introduced in late January. But Indian exporters are worried about a dip in realisation in the global market due to lower rates offered by Pakistan.
4. A slack performance in the African region dragged Indian exports by over 10 per cent in value, though the overall volume was up 6.5 per cent in the 2025-26 financial year.
