1. Preparing for a potential super El Nino in 2026, the government has identified 111 districts highly vulnerable to crop damage due to low irrigation and high risks of rain shortage.
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research has identified districts that had recorded at least a 10 per cent decline in paddy and maize production during the drought-bearing El Niño years of 2002, 2004 and 2009, creating a district-level vulnerability map for key rain-fed crops.
2. The monsoon is expected to maintain a healthy spread across the country into early July, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) projecting widespread rainfall that could provide a timely boost to kharif sowing.
3. The sowing of crops during the ongoing kharif season was up 1.7 per cent, with most of the crops reporting higher coverage from a year ago. Only the acreage of cotton, soyabean and urad (black matpe) is lower, which may shift to other crops even if it recovers in the coming days as monsoon resumes its progress.
4. The Centre has initiated a review of India’s approved basmati varieties, seeking to prune the list of export-eligible aromatic rice strains and preserve the brand identity of popular varieties such as Pusa Basmati 1121. The All-India Rice Exporters Association (AIREA) has formally opposed any expansion, particularly of Madhya Pradesh regions, of the notified Basmati-growing region.
5. Inflows into physically-backed gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) turned positive after five weeks of continuous exit last week, though there was a $2 exit for every $3 inflow, data from the World Gold Council (WGC) showed.
