Maharashtra government has completed the acquisition of iconic Air India building in Mumbai.

An agreement transferring the ownership of the 22 storey building was signed between AI Assets Holding Ltd (AIAHL) and Maharashtra public works department today in presence of State chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The State government had in 2023 decided to acquire the building for ₹1600 crore with an aim of consolidating different departments spread across South Mumbai.

AIAHL, which is a special purpose vehicle of central government, houses all the real estate held by Air India prior to its privatisation. It will use the proceeds to repay debt.

According to Maharashtra government officials, shifting of offices to Air India building could take place after six months after renovation and works related to central air conditioning and lifts.

Designed by New York based architect John Burgee, the Air India building was completed in 1974. It served as a headquarters for Air India before it shifted its headquarters to Delhi over a decade ago.
