The death toll in the collapse of an under-construction warehouse in Kolkata’s Taratala rose to 11 on Thursday. Five persons were arrested and a Special Investigation Team was formed to probe the incident.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and ₹1 lakh to the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh to the kin of those who lost their lives and ₹50,000 to the injured.

The incident occurred around noon on Wednesday when the roof of the under-construction warehouse at Taratala suddenly collapsed, trapping many workers engaged at the site. According to officials, nearly 40 workers were present inside the structure when the collapse took place.

Speaking at the Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister said a First Information Report (FIR) was registered and five persons, including the structural engineer of the warehouse, the lessee of the land and labour supplier of the warehouse project, were arrested. He said the warehouse design was faulty.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe alleged construction flaws.

Rescue operations, involving teams from the Kolkata Police’s Disaster Management Group, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, the Fire and Emergency Services, the Civil Defence, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), continued on Thursday.

Nineteen rescued persons are currently undergoing treatment at the Trauma Centre of Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital, the officials said.
