As the sale of electricity-based cooking equipment such as induction cooktops is gaining traction with consumers adding an alternative to LPG, the government estimates that the cumulative electricity consumption from this could be in the range of 13-27 gigawatts (GW).

According to government officials, industry executives and analysts, sales of induction cooktops have surged dramatically in the past four weeks as consumers in metros and tier-II cities such as Kanpur, Indore, Pune, Nagpur, Hyderabad, etc.

Before the start of the current hostilities in West Asia (February 28), the demand for induction cook top was largely concentrated in tier-II and tier-III towns.

Power consumption

Asked about electricity consumption from induction cooktops, Piyush Singh, Additional Secretary at the Power Ministry, said: “The transition towards induction-based cooking is expected to introduce an additional layer of demand at the distribution level, potentially influencing overall load patterns, particularly during morning and evening peak hours.”

Besides, the diversity in usage patterns across regions, arising from differences in climate, socio-economic conditions, and cooking habits, adds complexity to demand estimation, he explained.

“Considering assumptions on diversity factors at both state and national levels, the additional demand attributable to induction cooking is broadly estimated to lie in the range of around 13 GW to 27 GW under low and high induction cooking adoption scenarios, respectively. However, at present, significant impact on the overall demand is yet to be seen,” Singh explained.

The India induction cooktop market size is in the range of ₹7,600-8,000 crore.

Speaking to businessline, Anil Dua, Chief Operating Officer at Usha International, said “Earlier, the demand for induction cooktops was largely driven by Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns due to LPG shortage; however, over the past two months, demand has surged in metros as well—a significant shift that we have observed.”

Ravi Saxena, Founder & CEO of Wonderchef, said, “We have been witnessing high demand across the country for induction cooktops both from metros and Tier 2 cities.”

Higher demand

Wonderchef has been witnessing nearly 10 times higher demand for induction cooktops, he noted.

“Given the long-term impact of the disruptions due to the West Asia crisis, we believe this demand is not for the short-term but will continue in the long-term. Potentially, every LPG connection household is today looking at buying an induction cooktop as an alternative especially since the price barrier is low. In Fact, the demand has been higher than supply and there have been stock out situations too,” Saxena pointed out.

Besides, the government is also looking at measures to encourage companies to ramp up production of induction heaters, induction cooktops and compatible utensils. This comes at a time when these categories are witnessing high demand due to concerns over LPG availability amidst the West Asia conflict.

In this regard, a meeting was reportedly held last week by the Commerce Ministry with participation of senior officials from various key Ministries such as Power Ministry, DPIIT and DGFT to discuss steps that can be taken to enable companies to increase production of induction heaters and cooktops among others. The meeting was reportedly chaired by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
