Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar discussed trade and economic cooperation and developing sustainable currency, financial, transport and logistics mechanisms in their bilateral meeting on Wednesday, according to the Russian government.
“The Foreign Ministers discussed key issues on the bilateral agenda, as well as the schedule of upcoming contacts, including at the highest level,” per a social media post by the Russian Embassy in India on Thursday.
They highly praised the potential for cooperation in advanced technologies, energy and the peaceful use of outer space.
Lavrov is in India to participate in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meet on May 14-15 and also called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.
“The sides noted their strong commitment to further advancing the special and privileged strategic partnership, expanding trade and economic cooperation, and consistently developing sustainable currency, financial, transport and logistics mechanisms,” the post highlighted.
Special attention
The Ministers paid special attention to the situation in the Middle East and also discussed other pressing regional and global issues.
“The Ministers recognised the importance of strengthening the multipolar architecture of interstate relations and building a global economic system based on the principles of equality and justice,” it said.
They underscored their mutual intention to continue coordinating approaches in multilateral formats – at the UN, as well as the SCO, BRICS and the G20.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit India in September this year to attend the annual BRICS Summit. India, which is the BRICS chair, is tentatively scheduled to host the sumit on September 12-13.
