On World No Tobacco Day (May 31), the World Health Organization’s theme is to ‘Unmask the appeal — countering nicotine and tobacco addiction’ — with a focus on nicotine pouches, which are becoming increasingly popular among the youth and have high addiction potential.
The UN health agency will also bring out its first global report on nicotine pouches and their marketing as “tobacco-free”, even as regulation often lags. Governments are being urged to regulate nicotine pouches within comprehensive tobacco control frameworks, close loopholes, and prioritise public health over commercial interests.
