The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has sought an explanation from Blinkit after it recieved a consumer complaint that flagged concerns regarding a curd product ordered through the quick commerce platform, as per sources.

In a letter written to Blinkit’s senior executives, FSSAI has stated that it has received a complaint from a consumer who had ordered curd through the Blinkit app and fell sick after consumption of the product, they added. The consumer had to seek medical help and has also been attached prescription in the complaint registered with FSSAI.

The Food Safety Authority has also flagged concerns in the letter about receiving several complaints through social media as well as direct representations regarding unhygienic, spoiled or damaged food articles delivered by sellers through the platform, sources added.

The FSSAI has directed Blinkit to provide an explanation and also submit a comprehensive Action Taken Report (ATR) in a timebound manner.

In its letter, the Authority has also emphasised that e-commerce food business operators should be in compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act. It has also pointed out that Section 26 and Section 27 of the FSS Act, 2006, stipulates that a food business operator will be responsible for the safety of any article of food manufactured, stored, or distributed by them.

Earlier this month, FSSAI had sent another notice to Blinkit after taking cognisance of complaints made by social media users about the poor quality of eggs sold through the platform.
