In a rare case, a motorcycle was fraudulently ‘implanted’ into a road accident case in Assam to flaim insurance from ICICI Lombard General Insurance.
According to the insurer, a Special Investigation Team (SIT), which looked into a 2015 road accident case to claim insurance benefits illegally from ICICI Lombard, has ‘revealed’ an implantation of the motorcycle.
ICICI Lombard undertook a detailed review of a motor accident case in Bongaigaon, Assam, dating back to 2015. The case involved an alleged collision between a motorcycle and a bicycle.
Suspicious of the details, the insurance company initiated an extensive on-ground verification process. The breakthrough came when the company obtained the corresponding Police General Diary Entries (GDE) through RTI.
A cross-verification of the official records revealed that the vehicle insured by ICICI Lombard was implanted in place of the motorcycle actually involved in the accident.
ICICI Lombard moved Guwahati High Court to present the evidence of fraud and referred the case directly to the Special Investigation Team (SIT), Assam, constituted as per the direction of the Supreme Court in the case of Safiq Ahmad Vs ICICI Lombard GIC.
The investigation unit found glaring discrepancies between the vehicle registration number recorded in the initial Police General Diary Entry and the registration number mentioned in the formal FIR lodged latter on and confirmed the insured motorcycle was implanted to the incident to extract compensation by fraudulent means by manipulation of accident records.
“At ICICI Lombard, our focus remains on honouring genuine claims while safeguarding the process against inaccuracies, thereby reinforcing trust among our customers and stakeholders,’’ Nazeem Khan, Head - Motor Claims, ICICI Lombard said in a release.
