The death toll in connection with the Taratala warehouse collapse incident in Kolkata increased to 15 on Friday.
As rainfall was not likely to take place on Friday, the rescue operation could be wrapped up by midnight, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari told media persons. “I have spoken to NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) personnel. They have indicated that if the weather remains favourable, the rescue operation could be completed by tonight,” Adhikari said.
“Action has already been initiated. Six individuals have been arrested in connection with this incident. The Lalbazar Crime Branch is handling this major case, and the Commissioner of Police is personally monitoring the situation. I am receiving regular reports from the Home Secretary,” the chief minister added.
The incident occurred around noon on Wednesday when the roof of the under-construction warehouse at Taratala suddenly collapsed, trapping many workers engaged at the site. According to officials, nearly 40 workers were present inside the structure when the collapse took place.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe alleged construction flaws.
Following this major incident, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has issued a public notice, directing the suspension of all construction activities within its jurisdiction till July 31, or until further orders.
