1. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday scaled down its projection for the South-West Monsoon to 90 per cent of the long-period average (below-normal rainfall), leaving the country facing its driest weather in 11 years.

2. The government is shoring up contingency plans to insulate the upcoming Kharif season from potential El Niño disruptions. Dismissing panic over weather uncertainties, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, “No need to fear, rather preparations have to be in place.” Global temperatures are expected to remain at or near record highs over the next five years, with the Arctic warming faster than the global average, says a World Meteorological Organization report.

3. While India may navigate the availability of fertilizers during the kharif season, it could face problems during the rabi season. Rajat Kumar Mishra, Secretary, Department of Fertilizer, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, on Friday said it would be difficult to respond to queries on rabi crop nutrients’ availability now due to the current geopolitical tensions.

4. India’s foodgrain production in the 2025-26 crop year (CY) ending June is estimated to have increased by over 5 per cent, with rice production touching a new high. Rice production is expected to be over 154 million tonnes (mt), making India the top global producer.

5. Investments in physically-backed gold exchange-traded funds turned negative again last week, with US and Chinese investors leading the exits from the funds, data from the World Gold Council (WGC) showed.
