French auto major Renault aims to make India one of the top three markets for the Renault brand globally by 2030 on the back of speedier launches and more electrification efforts, its global CEO Francois Provost said on ‌Thursday.

At an event in Chennai, the CEO also unveiled the company’s FutuREady plan for India which includes reaching seven multi-energy vehicle models in India by 2030.

“We will introduce new vehicles, bringing our portfolio to seven models by 2030. We have already launched the new Duster, and we are already seeing strong interest and enthusiasm from customers,” Provost said in his address.

This is set to include vehicles from less than 4 meters to 4.7 meters, from ICE and CNG to E-tech solutions such as strong hybrids and electric vehicles.

Global integration

The India strategy also includes plans to integrate India more deeply into Renault Group’s global value chain through vehicle, component, and R&D exports, he said, setting an objective to reach €2 billion annually in such exports by 2030.

“The Chennai plant was built in 2008 as part of our partnership with Nissan. Less than 1 year ago, Renault Group took full control of the plant. This decision reflects the confidence we have in our Indian ecosystem,” Provost said. The Chennai plant now has a capacity of around 500,000 units, he noted.

Talking about the French automaker’s learnings from India market, Provost told media in a select meet that the company did indeed lose momentum in the country in recent years, and one of the reasons could have been a scattered presence in India. We have now addressed this by appointing a separate India CEO with a dedicated and strong executive team so there is no reason why we can’t have healthy growth now, he added.

India is also a major source of engineering and innovation for Renault Group. It has 6,000 engineers in its centre Chennai, the largest outside of France. The centre will help us deploy new technologies in India in two key platforms - Renault Group Entry Platform (RGEP) and the Renault Group Modular Platform (RGMP), Provost said.

Speaking about the company’s platforms for the future, Stephane Deblaise, CEO, Renault Group India, said that their modular architecture CMF-A is evolving into RGEP. “RGEP is designed to deliver strong value for vehicles below ₹10 lakh and supporting a competitive core line-up well beyond 2030. In the coming months, this evolution will start coming to life through upgraded versions of Kiger and Tribe,” he said.

RGMP will also power the next phase of Renault’s growth in India, he noted. “By 2030, four products in India will be built on RGMP, including Duster and Bridger,” he said.

The company also presented the new Bridger concept, a multi-energy vehicle, and has a goal to begin its production in India in the second half of next year.
