The Department of Posts on Saturday introduced a "Permanent Pictorial Cancellation" at Swamimalai post office to commemorate the spiritual and cultural significance of Swamimalai Murugan Temple.

The temple is one of the revered Arupadai Veedu shrines of Lord Murugan, located at Kumbakonam in the Thanjavur district.

A PIB release here said the specially designed Permanent Pictorial Cancellation prominently features the Tamil letter "Om" symbolising the sacred "Pranava Mantra" and reflecting the unique spiritual identity of Swamimalai.

The design draws inspiration from the temple legend in which Lord Murugan imparted the meaning of the "Pranava Mantra" Om to Lord Shiva at Swamimalai. The inclusion of the Tamil representation of Om adds cultural and devotional significance to the cancellation and highlights the rich Tamil heritage associated with the temple town, the release added.

Through this initiative, the Department of Posts aims to promote the heritage of Swamimalai across the country and abroad through postal articles cancelled at Swamimalai post office.

Officials of the Department of Posts, philatelists, devotees, local residents and members of the public participated in the event and appreciated the initiative taken to honour the heritage and spiritual significance of Swamimalai, the release said.
