Amid intense speculation over a Cabinet reshuffle, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday.

According to a social media post from the President’s House, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, accompanied by a couple of official photographs. With Modi scheduled to visit Seychelles on June 27, speculation is mounting that a Cabinet reshuffle could happen before his departure. If it moves forward, this will be the first major shake-up of the Modi 3.0 government.

Earlier in the day, veteran BJP leader from Kerala George Kurian resigned from the Union council of ministers following the expiry of his Rajya Sabha term. He was Union minister of State for minority affairs and also for fisheries, animal husbandry and dairy. According to a communique issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan, his resignation has been accepted. His term as Rajya Sabha member ended on June 21.

Another member of the Council, Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh, closed his tenure as Rajya Sabha member on June 21, though he has not resigned. Technically, a Minister can continue without being the member of any House for six months.

Of late, a few Union ministers have been given key organisational responsibilities in their home states. Their appointment has also led to speculation of an imminent cabinet reshuffle. BJP national president Nitin Nabin had on May 28 appointed Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Harsh Malhotra as Delhi BJP chief. Malhotra is also Union Minister of State for Corporate Affairs. He currently holds both portfolios. Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary was named the new president of the BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit in December last year.

However, a revamp of the ruling BJP’s organisational structure is also overdue. The party has appointed Nitin Nabin as its president but he is yet to receive his new team which is the requirement as per the BJP constitution. The Cabinet reshuffle is expected to coincide with the BJP’s organisational revamp.
