In a historic milestone for one of India's oldest higher education institutions, the Tamil Nadu government has granted co-educational status to the 184-year-old Pachaiyappa's College.
According to a press release issued by the college's Principal, Dr Baby Gulnaz, the state government formalised this transition through Government Order (G.O.) No. 100, dated June 15.
Established in 1842, the institution has served as a symbol of educational excellence across multiple generations.
The administration views the shift to a co-educational model as a major turning point in its history. The decision officially opens the institution's doors to female students, creating increased opportunities for quality higher education and fostering a diverse, vibrant learning environment.
The college noted that this move reaffirms its dedication to inclusive education, equality, and meeting the evolving educational expectations of society.
The announcement was received with "immense joy and pride" by the college management, principal, faculty, retired professors, administrative staff, students, alumni, and well-wishers.
The release highlighted that this milestone is the successful culmination of long-standing efforts by various stakeholders.
