Nearly 11,000 consumers in western Odisha recorded zero electricity bills in March 2026 after installing rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Data from TP Western Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPWODL) shows that 18,830 households had adopted rooftop solar by March, with around 60% paying nothing for power, while the rest cut their electricity expenses by nearly 80%. Generous subsidies under the scheme have significantly lowered installation costs—bringing a 3 kW system down to about ₹62,000 and a 2 kW system to just ₹30,000—accelerating the shift toward clean and affordable energy across the region.
