Driven by sustained demand in the market along with new launches, and largely unaffected by geopolitical issues, automobile companies on Monday reported positive year-on-year growth in their domestic sales in May.

For instance, the country’s largest passenger vehicles maker (PVs), Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) on Monday reported that its total wholesales (dispatches to dealers) surpassed the previous all-time high set in April (2.39 lakh units), by selling over 2.42 lakh units in May.

Total domestic dispatches (including PVs and light commercial vehicles) reached a new record of over 1.93 lakh units in May, as compared with over 1.38 lakh units in May 2025. Its total domestic sales grew by 40 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) to 1,90,337 units during the month as compared with 1,35,962 units in May 2025.

The mini segment (Alto, S-Presso) grew exponentially (140 per cent) to 16,275 units in May as compared with 6,776 units in the corresponding month last year. The compact segment (like WagonR, Swift, Baleno, Dzire) also grew by around 32 per cent y-o-y to 81,555 units as compared with 61,960 units in May 2025.

Similarly, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) reported a growth of 11 per cent y-o-y to 58,021 units in May as against 52,431 units in the same month last year.

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) also said its domestic wholesales grew by 9 per cent y-o-y to 47,837 units in May, as compared with 43,861 units in the same month last year.

“Hyundai Motor India has continued its strong momentum of the year into May as well, achieving domestic sales of 47,837 units with 9.1 per cent y-o-y growth and total sales of 61,137 units with 4.1 per cent y-o-y growth. In the first two months (April and May) of FY27, HMIL witnessed domestic sales rise by 13 per cent to 99,739 units, compared to 88,235 units in the same period of FY26,” Tarun Garg, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, HMIL, said.

Kia India also said it has recorded highest-ever May sales since inception, with wholesale volumes of 27,586 units, recording a 23.6 per cent y-o-y growth over 22,315 units sold in May 2025.

“The continued strong demand for the new Seltos along with Sonet, coupled with the encouraging response to the Carens Clavis, Clavis EV and the MY26 Syros, has helped us sustain our growth momentum. At the same time, recent initiatives like our Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) programme are playing an important role in making electric mobility more accessible and practical for customers” Atul Sood, Senior Vice-President, Sales & Marketing, Kia India, said.

However, ‘Hector’ maker JSW MG Motor India reported a decline of 4 per cent y-o-y to 6,048 units in May as compared with 6,304 units in May 2025.

In the two-wheelers segment, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) reported a growth of 10 per cent y-o-y to 4,59,611 units during the month as compared with 4,17,250 units in May last year.

The two-wheeler market witnessed steady demand during the month. Backed by its diverse product portfolio and extensive network of over 7,000 touchpoints across the country, HMSI continues to strengthen customer accessibility and expand its reach across markets, the company said.

TVS Motor Company reported a growth of 24 per cent y-o-y in its domestic two-wheeler wholesales to 3,84,565 units in May as compared with 3,09,287 units in the same month last year.

Bajaj Auto also said its domestic wholesales grew by 9 per cent y-o-y to 2,09,528 units during the last month as compared with 1,91,412 units in May 2025.
