Meta is introducing new supervision features across Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and Meta Horizon, consolidating all parental tools into a single hub. This update follows a significant increase in teen enrollment in supervision programs in the US.
Parents can now see what’s shaping their teen’s feed: This update significantly expands the Family Center, which now serves as a unified dashboard for parental oversight.
Starting today, parents of supervised teens can manage all activity from Family Center, a single hub for overseeing their teen’s activity across Instagram, Meta Horizon, Facebook, and Messenger. To set up supervision, users can visit familycenter.meta.com/supervision.
The unified Family Center and algorithm insight features are now available worldwide. Parents can manage their teen’s safety settings in one place and send a single invitation to supervise their teen across all four platforms, simplifying setup for families.
The number of US teens under supervision has more than doubled since last year, which Meta cites as evidence that families are actively seeking these tools.
The Shadow Over the Announcement: Meta’s rollout comes amid increased scrutiny over its approach to teen engagement and platform design. Earlier this year, in February, internal documents released during a landmark US social media addiction trial showed that increasing “total teen time spent” had been a company-wide priority for years.
A 2016 internal email identified teen engagement as the “top priority,” and subsequent documents revealed that Meta closely monitored declines in teen usage and developed strategies focused on school-based social networks to retain younger users.
Court documents reviewed by MediaNama also showed that Meta had internally acknowledged the risks faced by younger users. A 2021 internal survey cited during the trial found that 19% of Instagram users aged 13–15 reported receiving unwanted nude images, while 8% said they had encountered self-harm content on the platform.
A Peek Behind the Algorithm Curtain: Starting today, parents and guardians can use Meta’s supervision tools to view the general topics their teens engage with. By expanding insights to all available categories in the “Your Algorithm” feature, Meta is offering families a clearer understanding of the content their teens see on Instagram.
Instagram launched the “Your Algorithm” feature last December, allowing users to customize their feed to see more or less of certain topics. It is currently available on Reels and Explore in English-speaking countries, with support in the main Feed coming soon.
Meta will soon notify parents in select markets when their teen adds a new interest to their algorithm, helping explain potential changes in content recommendations. For example, if a teen selects basketball, photography, or musicals, their algorithm will update to reflect these interests. Parents can tap any listed interest for more information. This feature is now available globally in English.
What’s Already in Place — And What’s Coming: Meta said the new visibility tools enhance, but do not replace, current protections. These tools build on features such as Teen Accounts on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, which offer automatic privacy settings, contact limits, and content management tools for teens.
The interests teens select further support the safety protections in Teen Accounts. For example, some content remains restricted due to age-based protections, while Meta’s policies prohibit topics that violate its Community Standards.
