The newly released promotional materials all but confirm that the series’ defining elements, such as the massive open world, charismatic protagonists, uber-cool vehicles, a diverse set of weapons, etc., will return in GTA 6.
However, it may be time for players to bid farewell to one of the GTA series’ long-standing traditions in GTA 6. With the advent of ultra-fast SSDs in consoles like PS5, the iconic loading screens featuring Rockstar’s stylish artwork may soon vanish altogether, as if they never existed.
When I think of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, one of the first things that comes to my mind is its legendary loading screens. Like everyone else in the world, I always found loading screens in games to be annoying, but the GTA games are a clear exception. Rockstar has completely transformed a simple sequence of illustrated artworks of characters, locations, and more into one of the most iconic features in video game history.
It all started with GTA San Andreas, and it only got good from there. No GTA fan could ever forget Rockstar’s stylish artworks featuring the game’s protagonists, cover girls in bikinis, stunning landscapes, and more, perfectly paired with a killer soundtrack. Nothing will ever top the GTA San Andreas loading screens for me, although GTA 4 comes in a close second.
These loading screens inspired countless TikTok trends, memes, fan edits, etc, which have gone viral to this day. Thus, Rockstar’s ingenious way of making players forget the loading time has become a visual identity of the franchise. Now, GTA 6, the latest and biggest installment in the popular franchise, may not feature the fan-favorite loading screens due to technological advancements.
With GTA 6 right around the corner, I’m one among the million gamers desperately waiting to see what GTA 6’s loading screen looks like. However, the loading screens, one of the staples of the GTA experience, could soon become a nostalgic memory. The PlayStation Blog recently confirmed that GTA 6 will feature near-instant loading times on par with PlayStation’s first-party games like Saros, Ghost of Yotei, Spider-Man 2, and more.
Grand Theft Auto VI also leverages the PS5’s ultra-high speed SSD, enabling you to experience the expansive world of Leonida with near-instant load times.
If you have played one of these games, then you would know that loading screens are virtually nonexistent these days. With GTA 6 also set to have zero loading screens, one of the most-celebrated features of the Grand Theft Franchise could soon be lost to time. Now, Rockstar Games hasn’t commented on the end of the loading screens in GTA 6. But as a longtime GTA 6 fan, it hurts to see that the upcoming GTA game is possibly launching without the renowned loading screens
Although I enjoy the near-instant loading times of the PlayStation games, I sincerely hope that Rockstar Games somehow carries on the loading tradition. I wouldn’t even mind if Rockstar deliberately adds a loading screen at the start of the game. Everyone can agree that it would be a crime to waste all the spectacular GTA 6 artworks.
For GTA 6, I would gladly sit through a few seconds of loading screens featuring the new game’s characters just as I used to in the past. I guess Rockstar gets a free pass from gamers about loading screens in their games. So introducing one in GTA 6 wouldn’t be too much of a hassle now, would it?
