The manager of the Yomiuri Giants, Japan’s most storied baseball team, resigned on Tuesday after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting his 18-year-old daughter.

Shinnosuke Abe, 47, was arrested on 25 May for allegedly grabbing his daughter and forcing her to the floor at their home in Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward, local media reported.

After he was released on Tuesday, Mr Abe addressed a press conference where he announced his resignation and apologised for “tarnishing the proud tradition of Giants managers”.

“I caused tremendous concern and inconvenience to baseball fans, people involved in professional baseball and the organisation because of family-related problems. I sincerely apologise,” the coach added.

Mr Abe’s resignation came after the team’s owner, Toshikazu Yamaguchi, said they had “determined he cannot remain as manager.”

“We view the act of violence very seriously,” Mr Yamaguchi said in a statement.

The Giants president Toru Kunimatsu also apologised and said they would consider disciplinary action against Mr Abe.

Police said Mr Abe was “furious” when he asked his daughters, aged 18 and 15, to be quiet but they did not listen and talked back to him.

Nikkei Asia reported that Mr Abe was intoxicated at the time.

The 18-year-old subsequently contacted a child guidance centre alleging that she had been assaulted by her father. Child guidance centres are local government bodies that respond to suspected cases of abuse.

The centre made an emergency call to police at around 7pm local time.

Mr Abe’s daughter did not receive any injury from the alleged assault, according to Nippon.

Police had not previously received any reports or complaints involving Mr Abe.

The Metropolitan Police Department said that it would continue to investigate.

In a letter read by a representative at the press conference, the 18-year-old daughter denied being physically abused by her father and said it was an isolated incident, the Mainichi Shimbun reported.

She didn’t expect police to arrest her father, she said, adding that she cried when she saw him being taken into custody.

“My father and I have already reconciled, so please don’t worry,” she said.

Mr Abe said that his daughter was “at a sensitive age”, so he would appreciate it “if everyone could care about her”.

Mr Abe is a former professional baseball player and is widely regarded as one of Japan’s greatest catchers.

He recorded 2,132 hits and 406 home runs and helped the Giants win eight Central League pennants and three Japan Series titles.

In 2012, he led the Central League in batting average and runs batted in.

After retiring in 2019, Mr Abe managed the farm team of the Giants before serving as head coach and battery coach. He became the manager ahead of the 2024 season, succeeding Tatsunori Hara, and led the team to the Central League pennant in his first year in charge.

After his resignation, the Giants announced offensive chief coach Hideki Hashigami as acting manager.
