officially the first human case of West Nile virus in the region for this year 2026.
This discovery marks the beginning of epidemiological prevention measures in the state, with the aim of avoiding a larger outbreak during the summer months.
The first infection of the year activates health protocols in Harris County, Texas.
According to the epidemiological report issued by the HCPH in May 2026, laboratory tests have confirmed the presence of the virus in a county resident.
State physicians have identified the classic symptoms of this vector-borne disease, which immediately triggered the activation of mosquito control teams in the risk areas.
Harris County Mosquito and Vector Control personnel are already conducting spraying and trapping operations in the affected zip code to stop the chain of transmission.
Health authorities remind that the virus is mainly spread through the bites of infected Culex mosquitoes, which acquire the pathogen by feeding on carrier birds.
Symptoms and risks of West Nile virus
The Department of Health Services of the State ofTexas(DSHS) warns us that, although 80% of infections show no symptoms, the remaining 20% may develop what is known as "West Nile fever." Patients typically experience:
- Sudden fever and intense headaches.
- Muscle and joint pain.
- Vomiting, diarrhea or skin rashes.
In less than 1% of cases, the virus can affect the central nervous system, causing severe neuroinvasive conditions such as encephalitis or meningitis, which can be fatal.
Adults over 60 years of age and those with pre-existing health problems are the most vulnerable to these complications.
How to protect yourself from West Nile virus in Texas?
To curb the spread of the mosquito that transmits the virus, HCPH encourages the community to seriously follow personal and environmental protection recommendations:
Drain: Empty containers that collect standing water, such as flowerpots, tires, or buckets, where mosquitoes can lay their eggs.
Repellent (DEET):Use EPA-approved insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
Clothing (Dress):Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants in light colors when outdoors.
Schedules (Dusk/Dawn):Avoid outdoor activities during dawn and dusk, which are the hours of greatest mosquito activity.
