The Other Bennet Sister’s Mary Bennet (Ella Bruccoleri) is a seemingly very unlucky girl in the love department, who suddenly gets lucky. Twice. No, not like that. Well, not exactly. In The Other Bennet Sister, she finds herself breaking out of her lonely, loveless shell and soon has not one but two formidable suitors. Thomas Hayward (Dónal Finn) and William Ryder (Laurie Davidson) might look alike with their similar hairstyles, but they are vastly different. One is a bookworm who can’t make a decision, loves birds, has great forearms, but might take his whole life to admit he loves you. The other loves a good time and will take you to Italy. But he will not put a ring on it. Because he’s no Trad Boy. Is that a term? Trad wife, trad boy. Point is, he breaks with tradition, and marriage is simply a shackle on his life. But it doesn’t mean he won’t travel with you until the end of time. With the finale of The Other Bennet Sister around the corner, the cast sat down with Cosmopolitan to tell us who has truly captured Mary’s heart.
We asked Dónal and Laurie to do their best pitch to Ella about why each of their characters is perfect for Mary. “Oh my God, oitch it to me, guys,” Ella exclaimed. And here’s what they had to say. Nothing. There was 8 seconds of pure silence. Things aren’t looking great for Mary.

Dónal took a chance and pitched first. “I think Tom sees what makes Mary special. And what radiates in their connection early on, is they see parts of themselves reflected back.” He emphasizes that their love starts as a friendship.
Laurie decided to raise the stakes. “You should date Ryder, because there will never be a dull moment. And also, don’t date Hayward. Mary and Thomas are too similar! Whereas there’s enough of a difference, (with) Ryder, you will stretch each other. You won’t be able to share everything. There will be things that he can’t possibly fathom.” Ella interrupts, “Relationships are built on common interests, wouldn’t you say?” Laurie is stumped, but recovers quickly, “Ryder is willing to try anything!” Except marriage.

Which pitch scratched Mary’s itch and won Ella over for her character’s final choice? Ella breaks it down, looking at Laurie first, “What’d you say, never a dull moment? I like it.” And turning to Dónal, she asks, “What’d you say, that you make me feel truly seen as a person? I like to feel seen.”
Mary, so far, has been offered no wedding ring. But who really rings her bell? The truth is both of them, but there’s only one she really loves. Cue the birds, the forearms and Italy!
The finale episode of The Other Bennet Sister airs Wednesday June 24 on Britbox.
