It’s a great day to be a Livie, friends. Not only did Olivia Rodrigo just provide fans with the first single off of her forthcoming third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love—she also gifted us with the “drop dead” music video on the same day. So generous, truly!
Liv first teased the location for her “drop dead” music video on April 13 as part of an Instagram dump. The last photo in the carousel included a shot from the Hall of Mirrors inside the Palace of Versailles (specifically, showing a statue of Venus of Arles), and fans were quick to assume it was a clue for an upcoming MV. And lo and behold, they were right!!
Versailles as a location makes sense, considering she name-drops it in the song when she sings, “You lookin’ like an angel on the walls of Versailles.” (And the fact that the palace is best known for housing kings Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI is…interesting!)
In the video (which was directed by Petra Collins), Liv can be seen skipping from room to room wearing pink headphones and a blue babydoll dress before strapping on her pink Fender guitar, and there are plenty of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moments that her fans, of course, did not miss.
A few notable moments:
As a few eagle-eyed fans noticed, the white dress Liv wears in one scene is identical to the minidress worn by Jane Birkin in the 1975 French film Catherine & Cie—which is very in line with her London-girl-meets-Parisienne style.
Of course, most people associate Versailles with the former queen consort of France, and many people picked up on the aesthetic similarities between Liv’s video and Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film starring Kirsten Dunst.
Also evoked, whether intentionally or not (though I’m thinking it was very intentional): that running through the Louvre scene in 2003’s The Dreamers.
