Everybody’s got a cousin who starts their birthday on an intergalactic pub crawl with their dog and ends up accidentally adopting a vengeful orphan daughter… right? That’s the basic plot of Craig Gillespie’s film, an adaptation of the 2021-2 comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. We met Clark Kent a.k.a. Kal-El’s younger relative at the end of James Gunn’s Superman. The follow-up explains a bit about her origin story and personal philosophy about the difference between nice and good. She’s a classic reluctant hero who gets the push she needs over the course of the film.

How can I watch Supergirl now?

Supergirl was released in theaters on June 26, 2026. You can see it at your local multiplex in a standard format or premium choices like Dolby, IMAX, RealD, and my beloved 4DX. That said, part of the 4DX experience includes interactive smells, and I don’t think any of the planets Kara goes to in the movie are fragrant in a good way.

Without getting too deep into this can of worms, some of the initial response from critics and audiences alike about Supergirl is starting to follow a pattern I’ve seen before with female-fronted superhero films. The movie gets relentlessly picked apart. Folks see the headlines and the Youtube videos and choose to skip it at the cinema. Months later, to my chagrin, they watch it on a streaming service and wonder (loudly on social media) why it got such a bad rap because it’s actually good.

It doesn’t have to be like this. Be the change I wish to see in the world! See Supergirl now and form your own opinion! I’m gonna tell you how to stream it, but like… still.

Where will Supergirl be streaming?

You’ll be able to find Supergirl streaming in the same place you can find new and old films based on DC comics, especially those in the new-ish cinematic universe headed by James Gunn: HBO Max, the home of Warner Brothers.

When will Supergirl be streaming?

Let’s make this easy, and use Kara’s cousin as an example. Superman was released in theaters on July 11, 2025 and landed on HBO Max on September 19, 2025. Two months is pretty quick, especially for a summer blockbuster. It typically takes three to four months for most movies to make the move to streaming. But presuming Supergirl follows suit, that means we could see it on HBO as early as August, 2026. Woo!

What to watch/do while you wait:

If you want to marathon the Gunn-verse, go right ahead. There’s the 2025 film Superman ofc as well as Peacemaker season 1 and season 2 ready to queue up. You can also stream Matt Reeves The Batman and its spin-off series The Penguin.

My personal recommendation? Hand to Zod, Cathy Yan’s 2020 Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) my favorite superhero movie. Top 5, depending on the day/whether or not I’m feeling nostalgic for something on the Marvel side of things. So if, for whatever reason, you haven’t watched Birds of Prey… please do so! If you have? Watch it again! It’s similar to Supergirl in a lot of ways, too, actually. They both have messy (affectionate) protagonists and the “lone wolf and cub” dynamic as a trope. It’s just so funny, colorful, and delightfully dark.
