India is testing its Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system, a barrier-free technology that allows vehicles to cross toll plazas without stopping. Using overhead gantries fitted with cameras, LiDAR, radar, and scanners, MLFF tracks moving vehicles and automatically deducts tolls through FASTag, with number plate recognition as backup. Delhi’s Mundka toll plaza is set to become India’s second MLFF site, while Gujarat’s Choryasi plaza will be the first fully operational rollout. The system promises faster travel, lower fuel consumption, reduced congestion, and lower infrastructure costs. By eliminating toll bottlenecks, MLFF is expected to transform India’s highway network and expand nationwide across major corridors by 2029.
