In an exclusive interview with India Today’s Rajdeep Sardesai, Montek Singh Ahluwalia discussed the urgent need for economic reforms in India. He stated, “This is a moment actually to be doing more, not doing less.” Dr. Ahluwalia emphasized the importance of a broader national discussion on reforms to help build public understanding and support for change. Addressing the ease of doing business, he referred to the Rajiv Gauba Committee’s recommendation to eliminate more than 600 Quality Control Orders (QCOs), arguing that all of them should be removed rather than just 200. He stressed that excessive regulations act as barriers to business growth and efficiency. Ahluwalia also said the government should not wait for the next Union Budget to implement urgent reforms. According to him, key policy decisions can be taken immediately and later explained during the Budget speech — much like the landmark reforms of 1991.
