Chief Economic Advisor Dr. V. Anantha Nageswaran has strongly defended India's GDP estimation process amid criticism from some economists, including Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee. Speaking on an ANI Podcast, the CEA said GDP figures are estimates in every country and stressed that India follows internationally accepted statistical methodologies. He argued that India has not used changes in GDP methodology to artificially boost economic output and highlighted that revisions have, in fact, lowered GDP estimates in the past. Dr. Nageswaran also questioned what he described as an inconsistency among critics, noting that concerns about data reliability often emerge only when economic numbers do not align with preconceived expectations about India's economy.
