Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) prices have once again been increased, with consumers in Delhi facing another rise in fuel costs. Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) on Saturday raised CNG prices by Re 1 per kilogram, marking the third increase in less than 10 days. The latest revision comes amid heightened volatility in global energy markets and follows fresh hikes in petrol and diesel prices announced earlier in the day.

Following the increase, CNG in Delhi will now cost ₹81.09 per kg. Prices in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad have been revised upward to ₹89.70 per kg, while consumers in Gurugram will now pay ₹86.12 per kg.

The latest hike follows a ₹2 per kg increase announced on May 15 and another Re 1 per kg rise on May 17. With repeated revisions within a short span, CNG prices in the national capital have risen sharply, adding pressure on daily commuters, commercial vehicle operators and taxi drivers who depend on gas-based fuel for relatively affordable transportation.

The fresh fuel price revisions come at a time when global energy markets are witnessing significant uncertainty due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and ongoing disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz. The strategic shipping route handles nearly 20% of the world’s oil and gas trade, making it one of the most critical energy corridors globally.

Fuel rate hike

Concerns over possible supply disruptions have pushed crude oil prices significantly higher in recent weeks. Global benchmark crude, which was trading around $70–72 per barrel before the escalation in tensions, reportedly surged beyond $120 at one stage and is currently hovering in the $104–110 range.

India, which imports nearly 90% of its crude oil requirements, remains highly vulnerable to changes in international energy prices. The Indian crude oil basket has averaged around $113–114 per barrel in recent months, compared with approximately $69 per barrel earlier this year.

Alongside CNG prices, petrol and diesel rates were also revised upward on Saturday for the third time in under 10 days. Petrol prices rose by up to 87 paise per litre, while diesel prices increased by as much as 91 paise across key cities. In Delhi, petrol now costs ₹99.51 per litre, while diesel is priced at ₹92.49 per litre.

The latest increases have intensified concerns among transport operators and commuters. Taxi unions and commercial transport bodies across Delhi-NCR have continued protesting against rising fuel costs and stagnant fare structures. Industry groups have demanded a rollback of recent fuel hikes and revisions in fare rates, arguing that mounting operational expenses are increasingly affecting drivers and transport businesses.
